How do I become a tutor?
- Fill out an Online Application or visit the library to complete one in person.
- Meet with the ELL coordinator
- Complete an eight hour training course
- If you have previous experience teaching Adult ESL, you may be able to begin tutoring prior to the training course
When are the training courses?
They are offered several times a year. Contact the ELL coordinator for dates.
What qualifications do I need to be a tutor?
You should speak English fluently and articulate clearly. Being a good listener and sensitive to other cultures is a must. It is not necessary to have previous teaching experience or to speak another language.
Can I start tutoring without taking the training course?
If you have previous teaching experience, it may be possible to start teaching right away.
What time of day will I tutor my student?
It varies. Tutor/student meetings can be held whenever the library is open.
How much time is involved?
- Tutors generally meet with a student for 2 hours per week.
- It can be two, one-hour sessions or one, 2-hour session.
- A 6-month commitment is required of both tutor and student.
Where does tutoring take place?
Tutor meetings may be held at Largo Public Library in private study rooms.
How do I reserve a study room?

- You can also call or visit the library and ask someone to make the reservation for you.
Where are the students from?
We currently have students from over 35 different countries from all parts of the world.
Are students able to read and write in their own language?
- Some students are former professionals in their native county, some have post-graduate degrees, some have college degrees, most have secondary school educations.
- Some read and write English, but cannot speak it.
- Others have good conversational skills, but cannot read or write English.
- There are as many combinations as there are students.
What kind of background do the tutors have?
We have retirees, college students, professionals who are still working, former teachers, and those without a teaching background.
